Bonus engine

A bonus engine turns a promotion into enforceable rules: who qualifies, what counts towards wagering, what a player may bet meanwhile, and when the money becomes withdrawable. Its value is the rule set per market, because the same offer is legal in Anjouan, capped in Britain and banned in Finland.

Scope the bonus engine

Who this is for

Operators adding a regulated market to a brand built on offshore promotions, groups whose marketing team cannot launch an offer without a developer, and sportsbooks that bolted free bets onto a casino bonus tool. Every platform includes a bonus engine, so buy one separately only when the built-in engine cannot hold different rules per market or cannot cover casino and sportsbook in one place. For a first brand on one licence, use the platform's engine.

What the module does

  • Bonus types. Deposit match, free spins, free bets, cashback, reloads, no-deposit offers and tournament prizes, each built from a template.
  • Eligibility. Market, segment, verification status, first or repeat deposit, payment method, opt-in or automatic.
  • Wagering. Multiplier, game contribution by type or title, minimum odds for sports, maximum stake while a bonus is active, expiry.
  • Funds order. Whether real money or bonus money is staked first, and what happens to each on cancellation.
  • Abuse controls. One offer per person, household, device or payment instrument; links between accounts; patterns such as low-risk betting on both sides of a market.
  • Budget and approval. Spend caps per campaign, a second approver for high-value offers, and a version history for every rule change.

What a test lab expects

GLI-19, the interactive gaming systems standard (version 3.0) that labs certify against, is specific about bonuses. The terms a player can read must state when the offer starts and expires and who is eligible. They must state any restriction on withdrawals, wagering requirements by game type, game or paytable, how the player is told an award arrived, the order in which funds are staked and the cancellation rules. The player needs a clear way to cancel, and before confirming is told how much real money comes back and how much bonus money is removed.

Two further requirements catch offshore builds. Once a player has met the terms, the standard says the operator shall not limit the winnings earned under the offer. A maximum-win clause on a bonus does not survive that in a jurisdiction that applies GLI-19. And the system must keep, for every incentive, a unique ID, amounts issued, redeemed, expired and adjusted, and its status. Changes to an incentive's start, end, value, eligibility or restrictions are logged as significant events.

Market rules the engine must hold

The offers below differ by licence, not by marketing preference. If any rule in the last column needs a code release, every new market costs one.

Market or licenceThe ruleWhat the engine must do
Finland, from 1 July 2027Welcome bonuses, deposit bonuses, free play and loyalty or VIP schemes prohibited. Only modest retention bonuses to existing customers, with wagering capped at 5×Block acquisition templates for the market, cap the multiplier at 5, require an existing-customer condition
Great Britain, since 19 January 2026Wagering requirements capped at 10×; one incentive may not mix betting, casino, bingo or lottery, unless the player chooses freely where to use itCap the multiplier at 10; reject templates that pair a sports stake with casino rewards
Anjouan, Tobique and other offshore licencesThe licences on this site leave bonusing to the operatorApply your own terms, abuse controls and the lab standard where you certify against it

The Gambling Commission illustrated the British multiplier with an example. A £10 bonus at 50× means playing through £500 before winnings can be withdrawn. Under the cap the same bonus needs at most £100. On the Finnish rules the engine must also support a retention programme that has no tier ladder, because VIP schemes are banned outright.

The comparison of delivery models as a whole is on online casino software.

What integration with an existing stack requires

  1. A ledger that separates bonus money. GLI-19 asks for restricted bonus credits, and credits that can expire, to be shown apart from cash. If your PAM stores one balance, fix that first.
  2. Game metadata. Type, studio and title IDs from the aggregator, so contribution rates apply to the right games, including new ones added tomorrow.
  3. Bet settlement events. For sportsbook bonuses: odds, settlement, cash-out and voids, so wagering counts only settled stakes at qualifying odds.
  4. Rollbacks. A game round reversed by the provider must reverse its wagering contribution too.
  5. A request API for the CRM. The CRM asks for a bonus; the engine grants or refuses it under the market's rules.
  6. Risk signals in and out. Linked-account and device data from anti-fraud to block abuse at grant time; bonus cost out to reporting.

How bonus rollouts go wrong

  • Terms written in two places. The banner says one thing, the rule does another, and the player disputes the difference with the terms on their side.
  • A global multiplier. One setting for every market means either the British cap applies everywhere or it applies nowhere.
  • Abuse controls that only run at withdrawal. The bonus has already been played through; blocking at payout produces disputes rather than prevention.
  • No cost view. Bonus spend is not reported per campaign, so nobody can say whether a promotion paid back.

Questions to put to any bonus engine vendor, including us

  1. Set a 5× cap for one market and 10× for another, live in the demo, without a release.
  2. Cancel an active bonus on a test account: what does the player see before confirming?
  3. How does a rolled-back game round affect wagering progress?
  4. Can a template be blocked per market, so marketing cannot launch it there by mistake?
  5. Where do the published terms come from, and can they drift from the rule?
  6. Which abuse signals are checked when the bonus is granted, not only at withdrawal?

Frequently asked

What is a bonus engine?

The module that creates, grants and tracks promotions: deposit matches, free spins, free bets, cashback. It holds the wagering rules and decides when bonus money becomes withdrawable.

Can one engine handle casino and sportsbook bonuses?

Yes, if it receives both game rounds and bet settlements. Sportsbook offers need minimum odds and settlement rules that casino-only engines often lack.

Can I cap the maximum win from a bonus?

On offshore licences that leave bonusing to you, it is a common term. Where the regulator applies GLI-19, the standard says winnings earned under an offer may not be limited once its terms are met.

Are bonuses allowed in Finland?

Only modest retention bonuses for existing customers, with wagering capped at 5×, from 1 July 2027. Welcome, deposit, free-play and VIP offers are prohibited. Details are on the Finland licence page.

How do bonus engines stop abuse?

By checking at grant time: one offer per person, household, device and payment instrument, links between accounts, and a stake ceiling while a bonus is active. Checks that run only at withdrawal arrive after the money has been played.
